Colombian coffee production in February, the fifth month of the 2004/05 crop cycle, was up 36 percent to 1.046 million bags, from total harvested output in February 2004 of 770,000 bags, Colombia's National Federation of Coffee Growers, or Fedecafe, said, Dow Jones Newswires reports.

Total production in the first five months of the cycle was up 9.4 percent at 6.015 million bags, from total production of 5.498 million bags in the October/February period of the 2003/04 crop cycle, Fedecafe said in its monthly production and harvest report. But total coffee production in Colombia in the past 12 months, from March 2004 through February 2005, reached 11.570 million bags, down 1.9 percent from total harvested output of 11.797 million bags in the same period the year before. Colombian coffee exports in February were up 31 percent at 1.274 million 60-kilo bags, Fedecafe said. This compares to total exports in February in the 2003/04-crop cycle of 973,000 bags, Fedecafe said. Total exports since the beginning of the current cycle October 1 through February were up 11 percent at 5.414 million bags, from October/February exports of 4.877 million bags in the 2003/04-harvest year. Coffee shipments in the last 12 months, however, were up 2.1

percent at 10.691 million bags, from March 2003/February 2004 exports of 10.472 million bags. Fedecafe's export figures include green, soluble, roasted and other coffee types. Colombian coffee production is forecast to rise 4.1 percent in the 2004/05-crop year to 11.5 million bags from 11.05 million bags in the 2003/04 cycle, Fedecafe General Manager Gabriel Silva said in December. Colombia is the world's largest producer of mild, washed arabica coffee, with annual output of between 11 and 12 million bags in recent years. It competes with Vietnam for the spot as the second-largest coffee producer in the world after Brazil, according to the report.

* * * * * * * * * * * IVORY COAST COFFEE

Following is a table of the lowest, highest and average price paid for green robusta coffee beans in some coffee growing regions in Ivory Coast between February 28 and March 6, according to data from the country's coffee and cocoa marketing body, the BCC, the Abidjan Bureau of Dow Jones Newswires reports from Abidjan. The data is based on the prices buyers, cooperatives and exporters register with the BCC. Prices are in CFA francs per kilogram ($1=XOF496.561).

Prices paid at the exporters' gates in the ports of Abidjan and San Pedro in the same period, according to the BCC data:

Ivory Coast's coffee season runs from October to September the following year. The coastal growing area between Abidjan and Aboisso, including Grand-Bassam, produced in the seven seasons from 1994 to 2001 on the average 29,055 metric tons of coffee beans per season, the center/west Daloa area 75,300 tons, the center/south Divo area 14,248 tons and the central Gagnoa area 16,616 tons, BCC data show. Bongouanou is part of the eastern Abengourou area, which produced on the average 28,972 tons/season in 1994/2001. The country's total average production in the same period was 239,655 tons per season. Output has slumped since, and in the 2003/04 season exports totaled only 141,896 tons, port data show. Industry sources estimate however last season's total harvest at around 180,000 tons as, the export data do not include local processing and smuggling to neighboring countries, notably from the key Man coffee-growing area, which is held by rebels since 2002. The Man area produced on the average 55,329 tons of coffee beans per season in 1994 to 2001. This season's total crop has been forecast at 150,000 tons, including 35,000 tons in the Man area, the report said.
